The Challenge

The original de-escalation training was a four-hour instructor-led course that required significant staff time and scheduling coordination. The redesign needed to preserve the required learning objectives and core competencies while creating a shorter, more scalable experience that still gave healthcare employees meaningful opportunities to practice de-escalation skills.

My Role

I served as the lead instructional designer for the redesign, managing the project from analysis through development and implementation. I reviewed the existing instructor-led content, partnered with subject matter experts and stakeholders, identified essential performance behaviors, developed the storyboard and learning experience, built the Storyline course, and coordinated review and revision cycles.

Design Approach

I shifted the course from content-heavy instruction to a performance-focused, scenario-based experience. Learners encounter realistic healthcare situations, make decisions, and receive feedback based on de-escalation principles. I simplified supporting content, organized the experience around practical application, and incorporated accessible interactions that allowed learners to practice without unnecessary complexity.
